Rob Zombie returns with his sophomore film The Devil's Rejects and it's better than his debut effort (House of 1000 Corpses). Zombie not only shocks you with impressive visuals throughout the movie but the viewer once again gets to experience an outstanding soundtrack that actually enhances the impact of the movie.

Before explaining the plot it is important to point out that this is a loosely based sequel to House of 1000 Corpses. Some of the original characters from 1000 Corpses reprise their role in this sequel, as the Firefly family try to flee the police who are hot on their trail. The Sheriff pursuing them is mainly motivated by an event that takes place in House of 1000 Corpses (the death of his brother). It is important to mention this because The Devil's Rejects works both as a sequel and a standalone film.

With the police closing in on them, the Firefly family is forced to take their murderous rampage on the road. Otis and Baby escape a police assault on their home and plan to rendezvous with the demented Captain Spaulding. They want to connect at a motel located in a desolate area and then go into hiding. This does not deter Sheriff Wydell who is more driven by revenge than justice and is in hot pursuit of the remaining members of the Firefly family. Now the Firefly family will find out if they can outrun their past or if the past is about to catch up with them.

Picture Quality

Presented in Anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) the picture quality proves to be exceptional. It is important to point out that at times the film has a grainy quality. This is not a flaw but was used by director Rob Zombie to enhance the grittiness of some of the scenes. Other than that the picture quality is virtually free from artifacts and pixilation.

Audio Quality

When it comes to sound reproduction in movies, the audio quality can only enhance or degrade the film. This DVD contains two separate main audio tracks. The first one is a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX track. This track provides very good voice levels and separation along with the good use of the surround sound atmosphere. The other track is a DTS 6.1 ES Digital Audio track. With similar characteristics to the other track, this track also proves to be exceptional with stronger audio characteristics. For those who are hearing impaired, English captions are available.

Special Features

Rob Zombie does not disappoint, with The Devil's Rejects getting a very special treatment for DVD.

Disc 1 contains:

  • Commentaries - This DVD contains two different commentaries, one with Director Rob Zombie and the other with Actors Sid Haig (Captain Spaulding), Bill Moseley (Otis) and Sheri Moon Zombie (Baby). Two good commentaries that give two different perspectives on the film.
  • Blooper Reel - Contains actor screw-ups, such as forgotten lines. (5 minutes)
  • The Morris Green Show "Ruggsville's #1 Talk Show" - This is a television show that can be seen in different parts of the movie. (13 minutes)
  • Mary The Monkey Girl Commercial - Advertisement for Captain Spaulding. (1 minute)
  • Spaulding's Christmas Commercial - Another advertisement for Captain Spaulding. (1 minute)
  • Cheerleader Missing: The Otis Home Movie - Short clip of Otis filming one of the cheerleaders he has kidnapped. (1 minute)
  • "Satan's Got To Get Along Without Me" - Buck Owens Video
  • Deleted Scenes - Contains eleven deleted scenes with the most popular being the infamous Dr. Satan scene. Many fans were curious following House of 1000 Corpses what happened to Dr. Satan especially because he does not appear to be mentioned at any time throughout The Devil's Rejects. This clip clears up the mystery about what happened to him and his ultimate fate.
  • Make-Up Tests - Shows the different main characters undergoing make-up tests. It depicts the process (minus sound) filmmakers go through to make sure each character is wearing the right make-up. (13 minutes)
  • Matthew McGrory Tribute - A tribute to Matthew McGrory who played Tiny in the movie and died shortly after finishing the film. Known for his large stature he often played the role of a giant in a variety of movies.
  • Rounding out the first disc of this two disc set is a Stills Gallery, Theatrical Trailer and TV Spots.

Disc 2 contains one single special feature and it is one of the best, most in-depth making of documentaries that I have ever seen.

  • Entitled "30 Days in Hell: The Making of The Devil's Rejects", this full length feature goes behind the camera to illustrate the entire filmmaking process. Unlike many making of features that usually clock in at less than 30 minutes, "30 Days in Hell" runs a staggering 140 minutes. This is definitely a special feature that is worth checking out, especially those who are fans of the movie or are interesting in the movie making process.

Summary

Rob Zombie has quickly proven himself to be one of the best modern horror movie directors. In a genre that has steadily declined, Zombie has breathed new life into it. Horror fans can only hope he keeps at it. And while you are waiting for his next movie you'll probably want to pick this one up.
